Christmas Lights

Well our solar electricity system was installed today and now we are just waiting for the Electricity company to come and instal their meter and we are ready to go!!

I have strung out some lights for Christmas - about 35 metres - and guess what they are all powered by the sun!

Its really great - they come up at dusk and turn themselves off at sunrise. They are tiny little fairy lights and I have hung most of them in the trees at the front and one string along the front verandah.

So now we are celebrating Christmas but without the cost of electricity or its side effects.

Climate Change and the Federal Election

Now that we finally have a date for the Federal Election it is time to bring Climate Change to the table. Please lobby your local politicians to find out their views on climate change and tell them your concerns.

Now is the time to show how important you think Climate Change is and don't sit on your hands. Get out there and demand that politicians listen!

Solar Electricity

I have just signed up for Solar Electricity and hopefully it should be on the roof and up and running by the end of the month.

Our city (Blacktown) has been fortunate enough to be chosen as Blacktown Solar City by the Federal government and the residents are reaping the benefits with rebates on solar electricity and solar hot water. As we already had the hot water I have opted for the electricity as well.

Now you don't have to go as far as this - how about taking a couple of small steps in the right direction - change to energy efficient light globes, start a compost bin or just put a 'no junk mail' sticker on your letterbox!

Disappointing response

It is a sad state of affairs when we can only get a handful of people to response to a simple pledge - over 400 people have dropped by this site and yet only 8 people have left comments and some of those have double up!!!

Come on people - what's the use of complaining that our goverfnments are not doing enough when we can't even commit to making 5 small changes in our own lives.

I am not asking you to save the planet single handedly - just make a few simple changes - believe they will help!

Sheila has found that Colonial First State says no to Junk mail and tries to get their customers to be paper free.

Now that deserves a link to them - they will donate $2 to Planet Ark for every investor who akes the switch to email. They have been added to our Cool Spots links.

Disappointing result so far

I have been very disappointed with the response - we have had a lot of visitors over 160 in the last week but only 5 comments - and only 2 people have taken the sign to post on their blog.

Don't forget you can still join us even if you don't have a blog or web page, just tell us in your comments and we will add your name to our list so everyone knows you are helping to save the planet.

Please, have a look at the things you are doing around the home at the moment and you may find that you already do some things that will help in the climate change fight. Those things count!!

If you think you cannot make 5 changes immediately how about making one or two and make a promise to make more in the next 6 months. Anything, any changes you make, no matter how small are important. We need to spread the word.

Please make the effort - if we can't make changes at this level how on earth are we going to make bigger changes. How can we expect government to make changes if we won't make little ones.

Don't be apathetic - try and make a couple of changes and try and get others involved.

An Inconvenient Truth

Last night I watch Al Gore's An Inconvenient Truth.

I have always been a 'greenie' - I can remember when I was about 12 my father, who had spent his life on the sea as a fisherman, was offered a post on a whaler. It would mean we would have to live on Norfolk Island (I think that was the island), anyway I can remember carrying on a treat, telling my parents I would never speak with them again. My parents didn't go, my father refused the job but it had nothing to do with my tantrums more an economic decision.

Anyway, I was a greenie way back then and still am.

I have had solar hot water for about 25 years, put in a water tank 2 years ago, planted trees on my tiny suburban block, switch to power saving light bulbs and water devices, turn off my computer, printer, etc when I am not using them - I don't keep anything on standby if I can help it - I switch off, and, hopefully, by the end of the year I will have solar electricity on my roof to decrease the amount of electricity I use from suppliers.

Watching the movie last night made me wonder how many of us really try and do our part or do we leave it up to governments and big business to sort out. A lot of people and governments have an 'ostrich' attitude to climate change but what will that mean to our grandchildren?

How about everyone who reads this blog entry does 5 things to help reduce their impact on climate change?Then how about they get five friends to do the same - then get each of those five friends to get five friends and so on. Let's see how many people we can get to make just five changes.
